Piled Retaining Walls
Carillion Piling is experienced in designing and constructing piled retaining walls.
These walls are often used to support excavations, both permanent and temporary. There are various types of piled retaining walls; the principal varieties are:
- Contiguous piled walls
- Hard/soft secant piled walls
- Hard/firm secant piled walls
- Hard/hard secant walls
Contiguous walls, where adjacent piles are almost touching, are the most basic type of piled wall. These are used where migration of the ground and/or water between piles is not a problem.
Secant walls consist of primary and secondary piles. On these walls the primary and secondary piles overlap to act as a barrier to prevent the migration of ground and water between the piles. The selection of hard/soft, hard/firm or hard/hard secant walls depends upon a variety of factors, particularly durability and structural strength requirements.
Piled retaining walls often enjoy environmental benefits over other excavation support techniques, such as:
- Low noise levels
- Minimal vibration
- Can accommodate most basement or excavation shapes
- Maximise basement or excavation size
