Taxiway Extension LCA

To facilitate the more efficient use of the runway to meet the growing demand for take off and landing slots, LCA required the construction of an aircraft hold area. With no other available space, this facility had to be constructed over water in the adjacent dock.

Carillion Piling was responsible for the design and construction of the piles for this facility. Piling work had to be done when the airport was not in operation. This meant that most of the work was done between midnight and 6am. Some work was also done at weekends.

Piles constructed were bored cast-in-situ concrete piles founding in chalk strata. Permanent sacrificial steel lines were used to form the piles through the water which was approximately 11m deep. 54no, 1050mm diameter piles, 23m deep were constructed. Precast concrete beams and planks were then placed on top of the piles and finishing layer cast on top of these to form the taxi-way.
